The Oily Fish Study

Posted on September 19, 2015 by Editor Posted in Gourmet World, Health and Wellness .

There is a new study that interests Singaporeans. The study was conducted by Cleveland Clinic Children and it was all about the oily fishes. According to the study, oily fishes have plenty of health benefits especially for kids.

The study involved parents and their kids as well. The parents and kids completed questionnaires providing detail of how often they consume ninety eight beverages and foods common in Sweden. In the case of fishes, respondents were specifically asked of oily varieties like mackerel, herring and salmon. Researchers also asked respondents to name oily alternatives which include tuna, pollock, codfish and pike.

Their study revealed:

  • Rhinitis symptoms: 19% of the children who have rhinitis symptoms like runny nose or sneezing come in contact with pollens or furry pets after 4.

  • Allergic rhinitis: 21% of the children developed allergic rhinitis and about 15% developed non allergic rhinitis at the age of 16 (this is about 1,590 children who had no symptoms when they were eight).
  • Conclusion: The study divulged that eating oily fishes may keep the allergies away from kids. In fact, the study proved that about 50% of the children who consumed oily fishes dropped their risk of allergic rhinitis.

Knowing this, as parents, we have to encourage our kids to eat oily fishes especially if they are prone to nasal allergies. As mentioned above, oily fishes include herring, mackerel and salmon. We can also consider tuna, codfish and pike.

Allergic rhinitis is very uncomfortable and it can affect our kids. If the symptoms persist, we have to consult our doctors right away for proper medication.

Why People Attempt Suicide

Posted on September 15, 2015 by Editor Posted in Mental Health .

Suicide is an unpleasant and unsettling topic but it doesn’t mean that we have to ignore it. It is important that we know why people attempt suicide so we will understand it. Even though we haven’t lost a family or a friend to suicide, we still need to discuss it.

Wrist-Cut

Suicide attempts are common here in Singapore. Suicide is caused by different stressors. When people consider this, their urge to die is stronger than living. Here are some reasons why people attempt suicide:

  • They are depressed: The most common reason for attempting suicide is depression. Depression is normal but it takes guts to keep floating. The urge or motivation to live should come from us, not from other people. Thinking that the “world is better off without me” is not a good one.

  • They are impulsive: Sometimes we are rash. Being impulsive is not a good trait and sometimes people who are rash attempt suicide and end up regretting it.
  • They are shouting for help: If a person does not get the help that he/she needs, the only solution for them is suicide. These people usually do not want to alert their loved ones that something is wrong with them and as a result, we will be surprised of the attempt.
  • They are foolish: Making a mistake is natural but attempting suicide is purely foolish. Suicide is not something that we can spit anytime. We cannot just turn back the time because we have made a mistake and we were a fool.

If we want to know more, we have to talk to specialists so we will understand it deeper.

Easy Ways to Get a Digital Detox

Posted on September 5, 2015 by Editor Posted in Lifestyle, Medical Information, Tech News .

Do you check your phone as soon as you wake up? Glued to your iPad during your commute? Hunched over your laptop after work? If you’re answer to all of this is yes, then you’re a perfect candidate for some digital detox. Give your eyes and neck their much needed break by following these five simple rules to achieve a digital Zen state anytime and anywhere you want.

digital-detox

  1. Practise the 20-20-20 Rule. One good way to reduce your computer eye strain is by doing the 20-20-20 rule. Look away from your computer screen every 20 minutes, and then stare at objects that are 20 feet away from you for about 20 seconds. Easy right? But if you’re too busy to remember this rule, try creating a 20-minute playlist and look away every time the music stops.
  1. Try iOS 8’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ Setting. Couldn’t resist using your phone every night after work? Then help yourself by activating the ‘Do Not Disturb’ setting of your iOS 8. With this setting activated, all your texts, calls and notifications will be silenced and your screen won’t turn on even when an alert is received. Also, try scheduling the activation of this setting every night to keep you from spending hours on your phone before you sleep.

  1. Go on a Digital Diet. Another good way to break away from your devices is through your friends. You can throw an analogue party where your guests will be required to surrender their devices at the door, or you can also go on a tech-free retreat by staying at a gadget-free hotel.
  1. Avoid Using Phone Before Snoozing Off. The light from our phone messes up our sleep cycles, so avoid looking at any of your devices before you hit the sack. In fact, experts suggest keeping bedrooms as dark as possible to help you sleep better.
  1. Use an E-Ink Device Instead. Are you an avid reader who enjoys the flexibility offered by e-books? Then we suggest that you invest in a good e-ink device. Compared with your regular iPad, e-ink devices are a lot better for pre-bedtime reads since its screen isn’t backlit. Kindle Paperwhite is one of the best choices since it gives the readers access to the Amazon library, and has an option to turn the backlighting on in dark rooms.

Going through a gadget detox every once in a while is actually good. Not only will your eyes and neck get the rest they need, it will also allow you to appreciate various other things around you. So ensure that you perform a digital detox every now and then by doing any of the aforementioned tricks.

Social Media Mistakes a Professional Should Never, Ever Do

Posted on September 3, 2015 by Editor Posted in Social Media, Work and Employment .

In this age, building up your personal brand and elevating your career has become a lot easier thanks to networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. However, the line between what is and what isn’t acceptable to post in these social media platforms has gone blurry. To name a few, we’ve listed down five of the common, but deadly mistakes that a professional can commit in the digital realm.

social-media-mistakes-you-should-avoid

  1. Complaining About Your Job, Boss or Colleagues. This may seem like a no-brainer, but sharing any negative feedback about your current job, your boss or even your colleagues is a number one no-no. Always expect that your current, or even your future employers will raise a red flag at the slightest complaint that they’ll see in your social media accounts. In fact, even the simple ‘bored at work’ comment can be already be a negative way of branding yourself in the industry.
  1. Posting Too Much Party Pictures. There’s nothing wrong in posting fun photos from your night out with friends, but if you’re flooding your Facebook timeline and Instagram feed with photos that look like an outtake reel of The Hangover, then that’s going to be a problem. Your current and prospective employers will surely find a stream of your party photos a complete turn-off. So tone down uploading your party pics for a bit because you certainly wouldn’t want to be seen as a party animal job candidate.
  1. Going on a Venting Spree. While it’s tempting to go on a complaining tirade, you certainly wouldn’t want the negatives to outweigh the positive aspects of your online personality. So always keep your emotions in check, take a deep breath and think before you start posting any bad vibes that could reflect badly on you in the future.

Dont-make-these-social-media-mistakes

  1. Aggressively Networking for a Job Interview. Twitter and LinkedIn are the top two tools that you can use to network with other professionals in the industry, but understand that there’s a big difference between ‘networking’ and ‘harassing’. Repeatedly sending interview requests to your potential employers won’t help you land a job, and it also comes off as unprofessional. Instead, use your social media to seek some good advice and not to beg for a job.
  1. Referencing Illegal Activities. Just like number one, this is another no-brainer. Photo or not, or simply anything that you wouldn’t say or do in front of a police officer shouldn’t be broadcasted on social media. Doing so can be the quickest way to sabotage not just your career, but your entire life as well.

Social media is indeed the best way to build up your personal branding and propel your career. So ensure that you avoid the aforementioned social media mistakes to preserve not just your good online personality, but your career as well.
