Positive Effects of Social Media

Posted on January 22, 2020 by Editor Posted in Culture and Society, Lifestyle, Social Media .

Nowadays, all we hear about social media is that it’s generally bad for us in many aspects. But actually, we should think about social media as something that’s between positive and negative. Of course, social media has a lot of positive effects just as well. Instead of only focusing on the negative, here are good things about social media to take into account.

It allows for better communication

If you have a friend who’s leaving Singapore, for example, probably the best way for you to stay in touch is through social media platforms. Today, you’ll see more and more people communicate through social media instead of using text messages and telephones. That’s simply because it’s very fast and convenient.

It becomes easier to make friends

In connection to the point about communication, another positive effect of social media is that it becomes way easier to get to know more people. Before, we wouldn’t even know people who lived in the neighborhood beside us. But with social media, it’s become very possible to do that. You can even connect with people in other countries, right? Sometimes you even become good friends with people online even without seeing them in person.

You get to find people with the same interests as you

Again, because you can communicate with so many people on social media, it’s highly likely that you will also meet some who share the same interests with you. For example, if you’re interested in traveling to another country and you actually find a friend on Facebook living there, then you already have someone who can show you around. Or maybe you play sports and meet some people through social media so that you can have a few games for fun.

It encourages empathy

One of the best advantages of social media is that it fosters sympathy. Today you’ll see videos around Facebook and Twitter showing different stories of life, from people who succeed to those who are already suffering. Some people raise awareness through social media as well. You might see informative posts about animals on the brink of extinction or the environment slowly being destroyed. All of these things can awaken empathy in people and cause solidarity or even a call for change.

It gives one the opportunity to showcase creativity

Probably one of the best examples of this is vlogging. A lot of people make videos and it really showcases their creativity through the content they make. This is why trends usually happen in popular culture. More and more people show their originality and creativity by constantly producing different content. Even artists, painters, and music producers have an easier time promoting their talents because of social media.

Social Media Mistakes a Professional Should Never, Ever Do

Posted on September 3, 2015 by Editor Posted in Social Media, Work and Employment .

In this age, building up your personal brand and elevating your career has become a lot easier thanks to networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. However, the line between what is and what isn’t acceptable to post in these social media platforms has gone blurry. To name a few, we’ve listed down five of the common, but deadly mistakes that a professional can commit in the digital realm.

social-media-mistakes-you-should-avoid

  1. Complaining About Your Job, Boss or Colleagues. This may seem like a no-brainer, but sharing any negative feedback about your current job, your boss or even your colleagues is a number one no-no. Always expect that your current, or even your future employers will raise a red flag at the slightest complaint that they’ll see in your social media accounts. In fact, even the simple ‘bored at work’ comment can be already be a negative way of branding yourself in the industry.
  1. Posting Too Much Party Pictures. There’s nothing wrong in posting fun photos from your night out with friends, but if you’re flooding your Facebook timeline and Instagram feed with photos that look like an outtake reel of The Hangover, then that’s going to be a problem. Your current and prospective employers will surely find a stream of your party photos a complete turn-off. So tone down uploading your party pics for a bit because you certainly wouldn’t want to be seen as a party animal job candidate.
  1. Going on a Venting Spree. While it’s tempting to go on a complaining tirade, you certainly wouldn’t want the negatives to outweigh the positive aspects of your online personality. So always keep your emotions in check, take a deep breath and think before you start posting any bad vibes that could reflect badly on you in the future.

Dont-make-these-social-media-mistakes

  1. Aggressively Networking for a Job Interview. Twitter and LinkedIn are the top two tools that you can use to network with other professionals in the industry, but understand that there’s a big difference between ‘networking’ and ‘harassing’. Repeatedly sending interview requests to your potential employers won’t help you land a job, and it also comes off as unprofessional. Instead, use your social media to seek some good advice and not to beg for a job.
  1. Referencing Illegal Activities. Just like number one, this is another no-brainer. Photo or not, or simply anything that you wouldn’t say or do in front of a police officer shouldn’t be broadcasted on social media. Doing so can be the quickest way to sabotage not just your career, but your entire life as well.

Social media is indeed the best way to build up your personal branding and propel your career. So ensure that you avoid the aforementioned social media mistakes to preserve not just your good online personality, but your career as well.
