Skills We Get From Playing Sports That Help Us Be Better at Work

Posted on October 13, 2019 by Editor Posted in Self-Improvement, Top Sports Stories, Work and Employment, Work Life .

Throughout the years, many Singaporean athletes have been recognized around the world. In addition to that, Singaporeans are also quite known to be hard workers in their day jobs. It might seem far off, but can we actually find a connection between sports and work? Actually, the answer is yes! Here’s why:

Leadership

One skill that naturally gets developed in sports is leadership. In team games, for example, there will always be that one athlete who stands out when it comes to taking control of the situation for the team. If you develop this skill, you can expect that you can also be a good leader at work. Being able to lead can be a pillar for success. In addition to that, you’ll also be looked up to by your peers.

Teamwork

One of the most common skills between sports and work is the ability to work with others. You’ll have to expect that you’ll be working with a lot of people along the way. In sports, you work with your team to achieve certain goals together. Of course, you will do this at work also. We can develop our teamwork through sports because they teach us not only to move together with others but to know our individual similarities and differences. Understanding this will be a foundation for success whether in the office or at the playing fields.

Respect

When we play sports, we absolutely have to pay respect to our teammates, coaches, the referees, the opponents, and even the spectators. Respect is something that is deeply taught to athletes. When it comes to a job, you’ll have to respect the authorities, your seniors, your co-workers, and your clients. Showing respect displays who you are as a person. This means you are looked upon highly no matter if you’re an athlete or intern at a big company.

Composure

Some of the greater skills developed in sports are composure, self-discipline, and mental toughness. There are times when games can get rough or the pressure is too high. The athlete is expected to power through these situations in a disciplined approach. They are taught that these situations are when they will have to step up to get better. Having this skill when you are already working can also be valuable. When you are faced with stressful, high-pressure situations and you compose yourself well, you can easily get through these challenges.

Dedication

When you are dedicated to your sport or team, you will do anything to get better. You commit yourself to practices and other important tasks. This is an important skill to have at work because its very easy to get distracted. Sometimes we tell ourselves to just give up on the job because it’s too tiring. But when we learn to be dedicated, we have the ability to power through these negative thoughts.

Running Out of Motivation? 4 Tricks to Motivate Yourself to Work Harder

Posted on October 10, 2017 by Editor Posted in Work and Employment .

Running out of motivation at work can happen to anyone. If you work for yourself, chances are this is a stage which you will likely stumble upon at some point or another. Remaining motivated every hour of every working day can be difficult. Even the most passionate people working on their dream jobs have their unproductive days sometimes — the most brilliant writers suffer through a series of writer’s block before they pierce words together like prose. It’s perfectly normal.

It’s not easy to motivate oneself again especially if you’ve hit rock bottom with stress and fatigue, but it is possible to overcome these barriers with motivational boosters. Unproductive days can happen from time to time; there is no point in stressing too much over it. You probably either just need a break or start looking at things from a new perspective to improve your overall work attitude.

Take a quick break
With all the piles of written report and deadlines you have to meet, work can consume your every thought. There are times when even if you are off-work, it is still all that you think about. Be considerate to yourself and allow your mind to relax by taking a break every once in a while. Engage in something that is completely different from your line of work. Rediscover the simple joys that life offers, like breathing in fresh air outside your office or taking a quick break by strolling around your work compound.

Make a to-do list
Creating a daily or weekly to-do list is a good way to keep yourself right on track. Keeping it within your line of sight all the time will give you a sense of structure, especially when boredom arises during work time. Relish in the rewarding feeling of checking off each task as you complete it. This is also a nice way to prioritize which items you need to accomplish earlier than others, thus increasing work efficiency.

Give your workspace a cleaning
A disorganized workspace may only contribute to your unproductivity. Assign some time and effort into organizing your office space. Put up pictures of people that motivate you, quotes that inspire you to work better, or desk calendars that will remind you of your upcoming next meeting. Unleash your creativity! Make your desk a pleasant place to be, considering you are spending a major part of your waking hours there.

Review your goals
It’s time to go back to asking yourself the “why” question. Merely focusing all your attention on a dull, boring task won’t give you a free motivation pass. Instead, pause for a while and ask yourself why are you even bothering to do it in the first place. Think of your goals and remember everything you’ve envisioned for your work life. Keep in mind what motivates you, don’t lose sight of your ultimate goals in the long run.

Why You Should Consider Working Remotely

Posted on April 11, 2017 by Editor Posted in Work and Employment .

From answering emails while enjoying the hammock to avoiding the stress of commuting, you’ve heard all the common advantages of working remotely. Yet, there are still some things that could surprise you about what it’s like to not have to work in an office every day. Here, we listed down other amazing reasons why you should consider working remotely, be it in the comforts of your home or in your favourite café.

  1. You Workspace Can be of Any Kind

If you’re planning to work remotely, there’s a good chance that you’ll be working from home. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to fill a portion of your living room with a huge monitor, a clunky desk and an ugly swivel chair. I’ve heard of one worker who used her breakfast bar in her kitchen as a standing desk, and another who converted an area a bedroom closet into a secret office so should could easily shut her work away once the day is over.

  1. You Get to Save a Good Amount of Money

It’s a given that you’ll see an immediate improvement in your bank account when you no longer have to bear the costs of commuting, but it isn’t the only area where you get to save. Since you’ll be working from home, you no longer need to force yourself into a pair of polished shoes and a suit. You’ll also be able to cut down your food costs since you can now easily whip up your own meals right from your kitchen.

  1. You Create Your Work Schedule

These days, a lot of work can already be done at home and on a flexible schedule. If you work as a content creator or a web developer, for instance, you can already do your writing or coding whenever you want as long as you meet your deadlines. If you do need to work on specific hours, you’ll still have some break time – a time that you can use however you like, be it taking a power nap or playing a few tunes on your guitar.

  1. You Become More Independent

Since you don’t have any colleagues working with you, you’ll likely find yourself learning new skills for your work (e.g. basic coding, photo editing). Of course, you can still choose to get help from other people, but more often than not, you’ll be using a Google search or checking out the company’s website to look for the answer yourself.

  1. You Can Have Effective and Enjoyable Meetings

We bet you don’t know anyone who enjoys attending meetings. When you work remotely, however, you get to choose your meal and be much more effective. Thanks to technology, you can now set a 15-minute meeting with 10 people through video call. You can also use the chat function to share documents or say important comments without interrupting anyone.

Working remotely offers numerous advantages, from being able to work while still in your PJs to setting your own work schedule. So do consider this option as you start finding a new job.

How Travelling Becomes Beneficial for Your Career

Posted on April 6, 2017 by Editor Posted in Work and Employment .

Aside from having an opportunity to see different sights, travelling also offers several benefits for your future career. Not only does it require you to interact with different people and push you out of your comfort zone, it also allows you to observe and immerse in diverse cultures. Yet, it doesn’t just end there. Here, we listed down some of the advantages that travelling brings into your career.

  1. Allows You to Gain Inspiration

Whether you’re working in the field of art, business, science or technology, travelling gives you an opportunity to observe how other cultures execute their business in their respective field. Through this, you’ll be able to come up with new ways and ideas on how you’ll approach your previous business problems.

  1. Gives You Time to Refresh and Reset

Taking a break from your daily routine is one of the best ways to refresh your mind. Even if your travels involve some physical activities, your brain will still be able to retune and relax itself. Your spirit and mind will be reinvigorated, and that’ll be evident as you start working again after your trip.

  1. Encourages You to View Things in a Different Perspective

Travelling helps in lifting daily stresses, as it makes you realize that the issues you’re currently facing are rather irrelevant and small. When you’re miles away from home, you get to think about why you’re so stressed out with such trivial matters. It’ll also remind you of what your priorities really are and keep you focused on what really matters the most.

  1. Teaches New Values

Aside from the cute souvenirs, one of the best things you get to take home with you is the new values that you learned. Some cultures will teach you the value of warmth through immersing in a lifestyle where conversing with strangers is the norm. You’re encouraged to interact with the people around you instead of being busy with your gadgets, and as you return home, you’ll be surprised as to how this change in values helps you become closer with your co-workers and peers.

  1. Pushes You to Connect With New People

Travelling offers the same experience as when you first moved into your freshman dorm – nobody had any friends, so almost everyone had to be friendly with one another. Through travelling, you’re able to establish important connections (and even relationships) with strangers, thus improving your networking skills.

Because of financial restrictions, busy schedules and work pressures, some people tend to drop the idea of travelling. But if you get these professional benefits from going on an adventure, then there’s no need to be guilty about it. Remember, travelling is the one thing you’ll buy that can actually make you richer.

Social Media Mistakes a Professional Should Never, Ever Do

Posted on September 3, 2015 by Editor Posted in Social Media, Work and Employment .

In this age, building up your personal brand and elevating your career has become a lot easier thanks to networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. However, the line between what is and what isn’t acceptable to post in these social media platforms has gone blurry. To name a few, we’ve listed down five of the common, but deadly mistakes that a professional can commit in the digital realm.

social-media-mistakes-you-should-avoid

  1. Complaining About Your Job, Boss or Colleagues. This may seem like a no-brainer, but sharing any negative feedback about your current job, your boss or even your colleagues is a number one no-no. Always expect that your current, or even your future employers will raise a red flag at the slightest complaint that they’ll see in your social media accounts. In fact, even the simple ‘bored at work’ comment can be already be a negative way of branding yourself in the industry.
  1. Posting Too Much Party Pictures. There’s nothing wrong in posting fun photos from your night out with friends, but if you’re flooding your Facebook timeline and Instagram feed with photos that look like an outtake reel of The Hangover, then that’s going to be a problem. Your current and prospective employers will surely find a stream of your party photos a complete turn-off. So tone down uploading your party pics for a bit because you certainly wouldn’t want to be seen as a party animal job candidate.
  1. Going on a Venting Spree. While it’s tempting to go on a complaining tirade, you certainly wouldn’t want the negatives to outweigh the positive aspects of your online personality. So always keep your emotions in check, take a deep breath and think before you start posting any bad vibes that could reflect badly on you in the future.

Dont-make-these-social-media-mistakes

  1. Aggressively Networking for a Job Interview. Twitter and LinkedIn are the top two tools that you can use to network with other professionals in the industry, but understand that there’s a big difference between ‘networking’ and ‘harassing’. Repeatedly sending interview requests to your potential employers won’t help you land a job, and it also comes off as unprofessional. Instead, use your social media to seek some good advice and not to beg for a job.
  1. Referencing Illegal Activities. Just like number one, this is another no-brainer. Photo or not, or simply anything that you wouldn’t say or do in front of a police officer shouldn’t be broadcasted on social media. Doing so can be the quickest way to sabotage not just your career, but your entire life as well.

Social media is indeed the best way to build up your personal branding and propel your career. So ensure that you avoid the aforementioned social media mistakes to preserve not just your good online personality, but your career as well.

How to Start Freelancing on the Internet

Posted on May 16, 2015 by Editor Posted in Work and Employment .

Not all Singaporeans see it but there is definitely a shift in the world of work. We have arrived in an era where work is no longer a place. Work refers to flexibility, control, career growth and easy access all at the same time. Some Singaporeans are transgressing from the traditional office set-up to internet freelancing. We call this online work.

In an online work, we are not bounded by space or time. There are about two million job postings on freelancing sites and it is growing by the minute. If we consider online work, we have to take the plunge right away before it is too late. So, here are some tips on starting internet freelancing career:

  • Create your profile: We have to create our profile and make it remarkable because clients will check it first. We have to put our significant experiences so that clients can decide whether we are fit for the job or not. From our profile picture to our overview, our profile should be carefully thought. We have to watch out for the poor grammar and misspellings because it can be a red flag.
  • Write polished cover letter: Cover letter will supplement a good resume. We have to make our cover letter better than anyone else. We have to make sure that when clients read it, they will be curious not regurgitated. When writing cover letter or even resume, we have to remember KISS – Keep it Short and Simple.

  • Start small: Getting our first project is not easy especially with the competition but when we are blessed with one, we have to make it work even if the rate is low. We should not expect bigger rates if it is our first time. Our projects should be successful so our track record will earn positive feedbacks.
  • Set realistic goals: Successful people will tell us that we have to begin with the end in mind. When we identified our goals, we have to make it happen. If we want to make it happen, we need to make sure that our goals are measurable and attainable.
  • Marketing yourself: When looking for a job, we should see ourselves like a business. Somehow we need to market ourselves so that clients will consider it. We need to allocate our time in building our brand and the series of projects that we took will say it all. We need to refresh our skills every now and then. We can even consider online courses to entice more clients to consider us.

Once we consider the things mentioned above, this will work.

Knowing Your Limitation in Your Work

Posted on October 20, 2014 by Editor Posted in Work and Employment .

In a company, the one that you should bow down is you manager or if the manager has a boss, you should automatically respect him as your boss. You should know your limitations on how to talk or to act to your boss. Sometimes, you will talk to him like you are close friends. There might be instances that you and your boss are close friends.

However, you should always know that personal life is different from professional life. You should learn how to set aside matters about personal life and work. When you just let personal and professional life go together, there is a possibility that both of you will be affected. Not only that, it would also affect your business particularly in finance.

relationship-at-work

Do not let this happen. Make a clever way to know your responsibilities as a worker and not as a friend because if you pursue what you want, you will never grow. On the other hand, if your boss is not connected to you or you have no near connections to him, acting like you are close with them is somehow showing disrespect.

Although they act like they are so close to you, always remember that it is their job to make you feel that you belong in the company. However, you can still be close to them whenever they have gained your trust. Just know your limitations and avoid getting in touch to him after work. You can have contact with him but be sure that you only talk about work.
