Skills We Get From Playing Sports That Help Us Be Better at Work

Posted on October 13, 2019 by Editor Posted in Self-Improvement, Top Sports Stories, Work and Employment, Work Life .

Throughout the years, many Singaporean athletes have been recognized around the world. In addition to that, Singaporeans are also quite known to be hard workers in their day jobs. It might seem far off, but can we actually find a connection between sports and work? Actually, the answer is yes! Here’s why:

Leadership

One skill that naturally gets developed in sports is leadership. In team games, for example, there will always be that one athlete who stands out when it comes to taking control of the situation for the team. If you develop this skill, you can expect that you can also be a good leader at work. Being able to lead can be a pillar for success. In addition to that, you’ll also be looked up to by your peers.

Teamwork

One of the most common skills between sports and work is the ability to work with others. You’ll have to expect that you’ll be working with a lot of people along the way. In sports, you work with your team to achieve certain goals together. Of course, you will do this at work also. We can develop our teamwork through sports because they teach us not only to move together with others but to know our individual similarities and differences. Understanding this will be a foundation for success whether in the office or at the playing fields.

Respect

When we play sports, we absolutely have to pay respect to our teammates, coaches, the referees, the opponents, and even the spectators. Respect is something that is deeply taught to athletes. When it comes to a job, you’ll have to respect the authorities, your seniors, your co-workers, and your clients. Showing respect displays who you are as a person. This means you are looked upon highly no matter if you’re an athlete or intern at a big company.

Composure

Some of the greater skills developed in sports are composure, self-discipline, and mental toughness. There are times when games can get rough or the pressure is too high. The athlete is expected to power through these situations in a disciplined approach. They are taught that these situations are when they will have to step up to get better. Having this skill when you are already working can also be valuable. When you are faced with stressful, high-pressure situations and you compose yourself well, you can easily get through these challenges.

Dedication

When you are dedicated to your sport or team, you will do anything to get better. You commit yourself to practices and other important tasks. This is an important skill to have at work because its very easy to get distracted. Sometimes we tell ourselves to just give up on the job because it’s too tiring. But when we learn to be dedicated, we have the ability to power through these negative thoughts.

How to Manage Your Time for Work-Life Balance

Posted on April 3, 2019 by Editor Posted in Work Life .

Singaporeans are among the hardest working people worldwide. Although hard work is typically good, there are some who lose control of their work-life balance. This can be the cause of stress build-up and general tiredness at work. So, here are some things to take note to keep your time balanced at work.

Plan your day
Plan your schedule for the day and stick to it. Strictly following your schedule will typically help you finish your tasks as quickly as possible. Set a time for each activity you have for that day and try to finish your tasks at the time you set. Don’t worry if you start or finish late, as long as you try your best to follow your schedule.

Prioritize
When you have your schedule sorted out, it would be helpful to do your most important tasks first. This takes off a huge burden of your shoulders as you are able to finish a major assignment as early in the day as possible. This also allows you to erase your unnecessary obligations or at least cast them aside until later when you have no more things to do.

Delegate the work
Many people have reservations about delegating with their co-workers. Some don’t share work with others because they think that if they want it done correctly, they will have to do it themselves. There are also others who are afraid to delegate because they assume others might think of them as lazy and taking advantage. But if you think about it, you’ll never get done with anything if you demand to do everything yourself.

Don’t allow yourself to be distracted
Minimize distractions by putting your phone out of plain sight or blocking social media sites during work hours. Obviously, when you allow yourself to be distracted and procrastinate, you get less work done. You say to yourself, “I might be able to do this at home later so I’ll just scroll through Facebook for a while.” Now, you’re already doing work at home, even though you could’ve finished everything in the office.

Keep your work environment clean
Can you imagine that one time when you had to look for an important file and you took an hour to do so just because you have a messy pile on your desk? Keeping your place clean and organized will do you wonders when it comes to productivity. Have a clean work environment can also reduce stress and anxiety during work.

Relax
Relaxing doesn’t necessarily mean going to a foreign country for a one-week vacation. It can simply be meditating for 10 minutes or taking a walk outside of your office for a while. Many people seem to think that relaxing in the office is only a waste of time. But taking a break from work even for just minutes will usually boost your productivity throughout the day. Just remember not to relax too much.
