In the local Tamil society, Little India is called Tekka. This popular landmark in the country is situated near the east Singapore River. As what its name indicates, Little India is a small version of India in Singapore. Typically, this is a place wherein you are almost living in India. As a matter of fact, you’ll get lost once you don’t know this place.
Little India’s Brief History
Little India is under the Raffles plan of the city and it is separate from Chulia Kampong. Initially, it was a division of Singapore wherein Tamil colonizers lived under the British rule. But when Chulia Kampong became populated; therefore, many Tamil group moved out and go to the place where today it is called Little India. It is said that Little India improved with the help of Tamil group. Also, it became more attractive for cattle raising and active trade in livestock but it didn’t prosper. On the other hand, its economy eventually developed and today, it looks like a Tamil ethnic area.
Site Features
One of the most visited places here is the Veeramakaliamman Temple. Another popular landmark here at Little India is Serangoon Road. This is the center for trade in the area. Along this road are the establishments like Serangoon Plaza, Tekka Mall, Tekka Centre, Mustafa Center and Little India Arcade. Also, you can see here various mosques like Angullia mosque and Jalan mosque, Hindu temples and other places for worship like Methodist church and many more.
